How AI Reasons Through Problems

How did AI get so much better at solving difficult problems?

One big reason is reasoning. This means AI works through a problem step by step before it gives you the answer. It can break the problem into smaller parts, try different ways, spot its own mistakes and fix them.

When did AI start reasoning like this?

In September 2024, OpenAI released a model trained to work through problems on its own before answering, and that was a big step forward.

What happens before it gives the answer?

Reasoning models first write out their working, like rough work on a scratchpad. Say you ask AI to fit three activities into a one-hour workshop: a 20-minute introduction, a 30-minute exercise and a 20-minute discussion.

In its working, it adds them up and sees the total is 70 minutes, which is ten minutes more than one hour. It then chooses to cut the discussion to 10 minutes and checks that the new total fits. Only then does it share the final plan with you. The words AI writes during this working are called thinking tokens or reasoning tokens.

Is that the thinking you see on screen?

You may see a summary or only some parts of it. Scientists are still not sure if what AI shows is exactly how it reached the answer.

What to remember

Reasoning models work through a problem step by step before they answer, and those steps help them catch their own mistakes. The thinking you see on screen helps you follow the approach, but it does not show everything behind the answer.

Why it matters: Every other skill rests on this: knowing how AI reaches an answer and when to check it.
