How AI Remembers You
Prefer to read?
How does AI know your name when you start a new chat?
You told it your name last week, and today, in a new chat, it calls you Gaurav. It seems to remember you, but what really happened?
ChatGPT or Claude is made of two separate parts. The model is the AI that writes your answer. The app is what you see on screen, and it manages your chats and what it saves about you. The app saved your name from your earlier chat and gave it back to the model.
How does that work?
Say you tell it, "I run Nudgeable, and I prefer short answers." The app saves this as a note. Later, when you ask for a client email, the app adds that note to your request, so the AI writes in your style.
It is like a doctor who doesn't remember you but reads your file before you walk in.
So is the AI learning about you every time you chat?
No. The model learned by adjusting millions of numbers during training, and a normal chat does not change them. If you move from Mumbai to Bengaluru, the app updates its note while the model stays the same.
Then why does AI forget, even after you ask it to remember?
Saving a note does not mean it will be used. The app may save only part of it or not find it, and even when it does, the AI can miss it. So you can still get a long draft after asking for short answers.
So what can you do about it?
Check what the app has saved in its settings, and fix or delete anything wrong. When something really matters, say it again in your request.
What to remember
When AI remembers you, the app is handing your saved notes back to the model. If a note is wrong or missing, the answer will be too, so check what the app has saved.
Why it matters: Every other skill rests on this: knowing how AI reaches an answer and when to check it.
