Why AI Makes Up Facts

Prefer to read?

Why does AI make up facts and sound so sure about them?

You ask AI for research on leadership training, and it gives you a study with authors, a year and a clear finding. You search for it, and it does not exist.

This is called a hallucination, which means false information that AI presents as fact.

Why does this happen?

AI has no database of facts that it checks before answering. It learned patterns of words from huge amounts of text, and it writes the most likely next word. So it can mention a study with real-sounding authors, a year and a finding, even when no such study exists.

Why doesn't it just say "I don't know"?

This is by design. AI is often trained in a way that rewards guessing. A right answer earns a point, while a wrong answer and "I don't know" both earn zero, so guessing is worth a try.

What can you do about it?

Push AI to slow down before it answers, for example by asking it to check each fact before it replies. This helps, but it does not stop made-up facts, so open the source and check any detail that matters.

What to remember

Hallucination comes from how AI is built. It predicts the most likely next word and is trained to guess instead of saying "I don't know." Whenever the detail matters, open the source and check it yourself.

Why it matters: Every other skill rests on this: knowing how AI reaches an answer and when to check it.
