Always-On AI Agents

Why did three of the biggest AI companies launch the same kind of product within six weeks?
Meta launched Muse on September 8, OpenAI launched Dots on September 29, and Anthropic launched Claude Duet on October 21. All three are always-on AI agents, and they change how you work with AI.
What makes them different from a chatbot?
Until now, using AI meant opening an app, typing a prompt and waiting. These agents keep working between conversations and contact you when something needs your attention.
Do they really message you first?
Yes. They watch your connected apps and flag what you missed, like a deadline, a forgotten follow-up or a decision holding up a task. So you no longer have to remember everything yourself.
Where do you talk to them?
You reach them where you already work, on WhatsApp, Slack, Teams or even a voice call. You give instructions, check progress and reply through tools you use every day.
Do you have to manage many agents yourself?
No. You give one main agent a goal, and it splits the goal into tasks and hands them to other agents. You don't need to build and manage fifty agents, because the main agent runs them all.
Do they remember how you work?
They save your role, writing style, corrections and past work in notes you can read and edit. This memory is bigger, better organised and quicker to use than in any chatbot so far.
Can you give them work and walk away?
Yes. They run on their own computers in the cloud, so they keep researching, preparing documents and working across apps while your laptop is closed. They come back with progress, finished work or something that needs your approval.
What to remember
Always-on agents message you first, work through apps you already use, remember how you work and keep going while your laptop is closed. This is the biggest shift since chatbots launched, and it brings us closer to an AI assistant that keeps your work moving while you focus on what matters most.
Why it matters: Agents act for you across tools. They build on automation, which builds on knowing how AI works.
