Stop Retyping Prompts: Use Skills
Prefer to read?
Do you type the same prompt again and again?
Maybe you ask AI to write emails in your style, or to sum up meeting notes in the same format every week. Each time, you type the full prompt from scratch. Skills fix this.
So what is a skill?
A skill is a saved prompt with a name. Your AI chatbot keeps it for you, so you never have to type it again. If you write the same prompt two or three times a week, it is worth saving as a skill.
What goes inside a skill?
Every skill has a name, a one-line description and the main instructions. You can also add examples of good output, templates, reference files and even small bits of code the AI can run. The description matters most, because the AI reads it to decide when to use the skill, even when you don't ask for it.
Which AI model should you use to make a skill?
Use the smartest model you have when you design a skill for the first time, because that is when the thinking matters most. Once the skill is ready, a regular model can follow it well, which is faster and cheaper.
How do you use a skill in a chat?
Type @ or forward slash, depending on your chatbot, and pick the skill by name. To change a skill, edit it in your settings, or just ask the chatbot, "Update my email skill to keep replies short."
Can you share a skill with your team?
Yes. You download the skill and send the file, and your colleague uploads it and uses it right away. Some chatbots even let you record a skill. You share your screen, do the task once, and the AI saves the steps as a skill.
What to remember
A skill turns a prompt you keep repeating into a saved tool you can call by name. Save your best prompts as skills, and share them so your whole team gets the best results every time.
Why it matters: Agents act for you across tools. They build on automation, which builds on knowing how AI works.
