Chat or Work: Which Should You Use?
Prefer to read?
When should you use Chat, and when should you switch to Work?
OpenAI says use Chat when you want answers and Work when you want to complete tasks. But many of us have analyzed data and built presentation decks in Chat for years. The same confusion exists with Claude Cowork, Gemini Spark and Copilot Cowork, so it helps to compare how the two behave in real work.
Who stays in control?
In Chat, you read each answer and choose what to ask next. In Work, you describe the end goal, and the AI works out the steps on its own.
Why does Work take so long to reply?
Work makes a plan first and then reviews what it produced. So the same prompt can run for many minutes before you see anything.
What can Work reach that Chat cannot?
Chat can only use the files you upload in your browser. Work can open folders on your computer that you approve, edit and rename files, and use a browser to open pages, click and fill forms.
Do you get the same models in both?
In Chat, you get a limited set of models to pick from. In Work, you see the complete list, so you can choose the one that fits the job.
What does Work cost you?
Work runs longer and uses far more credits. So you reach your usage limit much sooner than you would in Chat.
So how do you decide which one to use?
Think about what should happen after you get the first response. If you want to read it and decide the next question, stay in Chat, and if you want the AI to keep going and hand back finished work, move to Work.
What to remember
Use Chat when you want to guide each step yourself, and use Work when you want the AI to plan, act on your files and hand back finished work. Save Work for jobs that truly need long thinking, so your credits last longer.
Why it matters: Every other skill rests on this: knowing how AI reaches an answer and when to check it.
