What Is an AI Agent?

What exactly is an AI agent?
An AI agent is AI that does the work instead of only telling you how to do it. Ask an HR chatbot how many annual leaves you get, and it answers from the leave policy. An agent would also log into your HR system, apply the leave, send you a confirmation and email your manager. A chatbot answers, and an agent finishes the task.
What makes an agent?
At its core, an agent is an AI brain, a goal and access to tools, like your HR system or email. Reasoning lets it work out which steps to take and in what order, and memory helps it remember your preferences from earlier tasks.
Is an agent the same as an automated workflow?
Not quite. A workflow follows fixed steps that you set in advance, while an agent decides the steps itself based on the goal. Many real agents mix both, with fixed steps where you need control and AI deciding the rest.
How do you get an agent to work well?
Agents follow your instructions exactly as written, so give clear instructions, enough context and guardrails, like never applying for more leave than you have. When it gets something wrong, trace back to the cause. It may have read an instruction too literally, missed a step or used the wrong tool. Fix it, then test the agent on tasks where you already know the right result. This is called agent evaluation.
What to remember
A chatbot tells you how many leaves you have, while an agent applies the leave and informs your manager. Agents follow instructions literally, so clear instructions, enough context and guardrails decide how well they work.
Why it matters: Agents act for you across tools. They build on automation, which builds on knowing how AI works.
