How does AI talk with you?
You ask AI a question out loud, and a second later it answers in a natural voice. It feels like you are speaking to a human, but a lot happens in that one second.
Traditionally, it happens in three steps. AI turns your speech into text, then a large language model, or LLM, which is the AI that reads and writes text, writes a reply. Finally, AI turns that reply into speech.
How does AI turn your speech into text?
Your voice is a sound wave. AI cuts it into tiny slices and measures the sound in each one, which gives it a pattern to read. It has learned from thousands of hours of recorded speech with matching text, so it knows which patterns match which words.
What is the problem with these three steps?
First, your tone is lost. Once your voice becomes text, "fine, thanks" looks the same whether you sounded happy or annoyed. Second, every step adds delay.
How do newer voice models fix this?
They skip the text. Speech-to-speech models read small pieces of your voice directly and predict the next pieces of sound for the reply, the same way an LLM predicts the next word. Because they hear the sound itself, they catch your tone, reply faster and speak with natural pauses.
How can AI copy your voice?
Voice AI has already learned how thousands of people speak, so it does not start from scratch. From a short recording of your voice, it picks up what makes yours different, like your pitch, accent and speed, and speaks the same way. The more of your voice it hears, the closer the copy gets.
What to remember
Older voice AI turned your speech into text and back again, losing your tone along the way. Newer models work with sound directly, so they hear how you feel and reply faster.
Why it matters: Every other skill rests on this: knowing how AI reaches an answer and when to check it.
