How AI Makes Images and Videos
Prefer to read?
AI can now draw pictures and make videos from a single line of text. But what is happening inside?
You may know that AI writes by guessing the next word, one word at a time. It makes pictures in a similar way. The image is cut into a grid of small squares, and each square becomes a set of numbers that captures its colour, texture or shape. To the AI, these squares are like words in a sentence.
So how does it create an image from nothing?
During training, it studies millions of images with their descriptions and learns which squares usually sit next to which for words like "cat" or "rain". When you give a prompt, it guesses one square, then the next, until the grid is full. Many tools also use a second method. They start with static, like a blank TV screen, and clean it up step by step until a sharp picture appears. Some tools, like Midjourney, use only this second method.
And videos?
A video is a stack of pictures, so the model cuts it into small blocks that cover both space and a few moments of time. Trained on millions of clips, it learns how things usually move and creates all the frames together so the cat stays the same cat from start to end.
So why does my own logo or face often look a little off?
Your upload is not pasted in. It gets converted into codes and drawn again, and small details slip away. Sunsets and coffee mugs are easy to redraw after millions of examples, but your face is new to it, so it guesses. The same thing happens when you ask it to change just one part, so check that the rest of the image has not shifted too.
What to remember
These models learn from millions of captioned pictures and clips, then create new ones piece by piece. Common scenes come out right, but check your own logo, product or face closely before you use it.
Why it matters: AI drafts slides and visuals in minutes, which leaves your time for the message itself.
