Why does every AI chatbot cost $20 a month?

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all charge the same amount for their main paid plan. That number came from a quick survey on a Google Form, and it shaped how the whole industry prices AI.

Why did OpenAI need a paid plan so fast?

ChatGPT launched in November 2022 and became one of the fastest-growing products ever. So many people used it that the servers kept crashing, and OpenAI needed a quick way to manage demand.

So how did they pick $20?

In January 2023, Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, had no time for proper market research, so he shared a Google Form on OpenAI's Discord, an online chat community. It asked four questions: what price is too expensive, what price feels expensive but still doable, what price is a bargain, and what price is so cheap you would doubt the quality. The answers pointed to $20, and ChatGPT Plus launched at that price in February 2023.

Why did every other company copy it?

$20 feels like a Netflix plan or a few coffees a month, cheap enough to feel personal and expensive enough to feel premium. Once ChatGPT set that price, a lower price made a rival look weaker and a higher price scared users away, so Gemini, Claude and Perplexity landed on $20 to show they were in the same league.

Will AI stay at $20?

Many experts say $20 no longer covers the cost of running today's more powerful models. That is why you now see $200 a month plans and pricing based on how much you use.

What to remember

The $20 price for AI chatbots started as a quick Discord survey to handle huge demand, and every rival followed it. As AI gets more powerful and costly to run, expect to pay more for the best models.

Why it matters: Every other skill rests on this: knowing how AI reaches an answer and when to check it.
