AI Can't Forget. It Just Rereads.

Have you ever told ChatGPT to forget something?
Say you ask it to write a LinkedIn post with plenty of emojis, and you don't like the result. So you type, "Forget what I just said. No emojis." ChatGPT replies, "Sure, I have forgotten that," but AI cannot forget, because it never remembered your chat in the first place.
So where does AI keep what it knows?
Everything the AI knows was fixed when it was trained. Its so-called brain is a huge set of numbers called weights, and those numbers stay frozen after training. Your chat does not change them, so there is nothing for the AI to delete.
Then how does it follow your conversation?
Every time you send a message, the whole conversation goes to the AI again, from your first message to your latest one. The AI rereads the full chat before each reply, so your emoji instruction is still there, and your "forget it" message is just one more line below it. The AI sees both "use plenty of emojis" and "no emojis," which is why the emojis creep back a few replies later.
So how do you make AI drop an instruction?
Go back and edit your earlier message instead of adding a new one, or start a fresh chat. Some apps also let you branch, which means starting a new chat from any point in the old one, before the instruction you want gone. If your app has a memory feature that saves notes about you, delete the note there too.
What to remember
AI can't forget, because it never remembers your chat. It just rereads it every time. To remove an instruction, edit the old message or start a new chat, so the AI never sees it again.
Why it matters: Every other skill rests on this: knowing how AI reaches an answer and when to check it.
