What Is Generative AI?

Prefer to read?

Did AI begin with ChatGPT?

No. You were already using AI when Netflix recommended a show or a shopping app suggested a product. These systems use machine learning.

So, what is machine learning?

It learns patterns from data. If you often watch crime dramas, Netflix can use that, along with other signals, to recommend similar shows. But AI also learns patterns in more complex data, such as faces.

How does AI recognise a face?

Facial recognition systems often use deep learning, a type of machine learning built with neural networks. For example, your phone compares your face with the face it saved when you set it up, and then unlocks. Deep learning also powers speech recognition, like turning a WhatsApp voice message into text.

But recognising a face or a voice is different from creating something. So how does AI do that?

That is where generative AI comes in. It uses deep learning to create new content. ChatGPT can draft an email, an image generator can create a poster, and a voice model can narrate your script.

How does it learn to create that content?

During training, the model learns patterns from millions of examples. When you ask for an email or a poster, it uses those patterns to create a response.

So can you trust everything it creates?

Not always. It predicts what a good answer should look like, so it can sound right and still be wrong. Treat what it gives you as a first draft, and review it before you share it.

What to remember

Machine learning recommends what to watch, deep learning recognises your face and voice, and generative AI creates new content. ChatGPT and Claude may be new, but AI has been helping you for years.

Why it matters: Every other skill rests on this: knowing how AI reaches an answer and when to check it.
