Why Can't You See Your Token Count?

Can you find out how many tokens ChatGPT will use before you give it a task?

Imagine you want ChatGPT to create a presentation, but first you want to know how many tokens it will use, so you can decide whether to use AI or design it yourself. Tokens are the small chunks of words that AI reads and writes, and they decide how much a task costs. It's a fair ask, because before we spend money on anything, we want to know the price.

So why can't anyone tell you that number?

No one can give the exact count before the task starts, because the AI decides how much to think and write as it goes. But once the task is done, the count is known. When developers use the same model through their own software, every reply comes with a token report, so the number exists, and the chat apps simply don't show it to you.

Why would AI companies keep it out of sight?

There are three likely business reasons. First, if you saw the count for every prompt, you would think twice before uploading a big file, asking for one more version or using the most powerful model for a simple task, so you would use AI less. Second, you would ask harder questions, like why a simple task used 12,000 tokens, or why you pay for failed attempts and extra steps you never asked for.

And the third reason?

A visible count would raise your expectations. If you could see your tokens, you would want unused ones carried to next month, refunds, top-ups or the choice to pay only for what you use. AI companies have not said any of this out loud, so treat these reasons as a likely explanation, not a confirmed one.

What to remember

The token count for every prompt already exists, and chat apps choose not to show it. As more people learn what tokens are, expect them to ask to see the count for every prompt and decide if the task was worth it.

Why it matters: Every other skill rests on this: knowing how AI reaches an answer and when to check it.
